Roadblocks

I updated my computer a few days ago.  For those who don’t know, I’m a bit of a linux geek, and have been exclusively using linux based operating systems on my computers for years now.  So, when big updates to my favorite distribution – Ubuntu – come out, I get pretty excited.  I find it pretty amazing that free and open software is more intuitive, better preforming, and much better looking than anything you can buy out there.  Even beyond this, the entire philosophy of using and giving back to a community, to deliver a product benefiting the common good is an idea I have no problems supporting.  Capitalism sucks.

Race for the Cure was going on this morning, right in the middle of downtown.  I totally support the whole thing, but this is like the sixth weekend in a row that downtown streets have been closed, from the lake to the capitol.  I live on the east side of downtown, and work on the west, and all these events cause me much mental anguish as I try to get to where I need to go.  An overweight redneck police officer, wearing mirrored M-frame Oakleys wanted to give me a ticket for riding through a red light – at an intersection that was completely empty and closed to traffic.  I told him I’d take it to court, and he decided to let me go without too much hassle.  So far, my theory that mirrored M-frame Oakleys are indicative of a douche bag police officer stands true.

I think I’m going to put the fixed gear back up for sale very soon.  Last time I never followed through on any offers.  Bikes are special objects, creating an attachment to their owners that’s difficult to explain.  I never like letting go of them.  However, I’m currently eyeing a new Cannondale touring bike, which I can get for a pretty incredible price thanks to my employee benefits.  I have visions of short weekend trips into the hill country, and eventually some extended distance stuff as well.  My biggest dream right now is moving towards Colorado next spring – by bicycle, eventually setting near Ft. Collins.  I’ll need to downsize my possessions before then, but I definitely think it’d be possible.

It’s almost time for me to head to work for the day.  At least I’m on the other side of the runners now…
